A week of flax

the week has been amazing. I’ve been at three flax harvests in cardiff. St Fagan’s museum first, where the making n mending club pulled just a little, as the main crop needs a couple more weeks. it’s hanging outside Gweithdy building undercover, to then move to a barn in a week for keeping as display bunches.

then came cardiff met uni – neat rows of fine flax.

finally the little crop at Global Gardens, now hung in the classroom to dry. this will be given out to the community as dried bunches to do what they want with – decorate, eat or save the seeds, process the fibres to linen.

it’s going to be a busy month 💚

Here’s a small project i want to work towards… my grandad’s prawning net. made by a blacksmith at least 70 years ago, possibly much more. the net is likely linen and had survived pretty much intact, only gone where it’s next to the rusted frame. I’ve stripped and cleaned it, i’ll make a new handle and then rethread with the linen we’ll make.
